Shania Twain reveals heartbreaking battle with Lyme disease almost cost her singing career

SHANIA TWAIN has revealed that she nearly lost her singing career as a result of suffering from Lyme disease.

The 51-year-old country music legend opened up about the “debilitating” disease, after previously citing the devastating break-up of her marriage to record producer Robert Lange as the reason for her sudden disappearance from the limelight after her meteoric rise to fame in the 1990s.

Now, however, Shania has confessed that her symptoms of the disease prevented her from returning to music, telling The Sun’s Bizarre life podcast: “I lost my voice for several years and I could speak but I couldn’t yell.

“I could never yell at my dog or my son or whatever,” she explained, admitting that she found the experience “depressing”.

Shania confessed that it took several years to get her voice back to full strength, revealing her fears that she would never be able to release another album again.

Lyme disease, which is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks, can result in flu-like symptoms, fatigue, muscle and joint pain as well as later developing swelling in the joints and problems affecting the nervous system, such as numbness and stiffness.

As well as battling the condition, Shania also found out that her husband was having an affair with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiebaud.

Opening up about the heartbreak, the That Don’t Impress Me Much, hitmaker said: “I thought that marriage was forever. I really, really believed it.

“I thought, ‘I’m safe. This creative relationship is forever’,” she continued. “And I really counted on that.”

After the devastation of the betrayal, both Shania and Marie-Anne separated from their respective husbands and, in an ironic turnaround, Shania found love with her friend’s ex-husband Frederic Thiebaud, whom she then married in 2011.

She is now set to release her first studio album since 2002’s Up!, as she reflects on the difficult period of her life in several songs on her upcoming fifth record, Now.

“This is not a divorce album,” she insisted. “I didn’t want to make a divorce album, but some songs do refer to that period.”
